Adjustable
Gastric Banding Surgery, Swedish Band or
Lap-Band
performed as Keyhole Surgery, or Band-Aid
Surgery, in Bangkok, Thailand
|
Laparoscopic Bariatric Specialists in Bangkok,
Thailand perform Gastric Banding, an
adjustable Weight Loss
Surgery, WLS, where a
silicone device such as a LapBand, or Lap-Band,
or the newer Swedish Band, is placed around the
stomach, reducing the amount of food the patient
can eat. This is known as Adjustable Gastric
Banding, because the device can be adjusted
after the surgery.
Gastric Banding has been performed worldwide
over 100,000 times. International Standards are
well controlled and our surgeons are specially
trained and certified in use of these devices.

|
The Banding device is inserted through a
Laparoscope, in a minimally invasive procedure. After applying
general anesthesia, the surgeon will make a few
small incisions in the abdominal wall for the
insertion of the Lap-Band and the surgical
instruments and camera required to complete the
procedure.

|
The surgeon then makes a small tunnel
behind the top of the stomach, which allows him
to insert the band, wrap it around the upper
part of the stomach and lock it securely in a
ring, dividing the stomach into two portions.
Using tubing,
the band is then connected to an access port
placed beneath the skin during surgery. Later,
the surgeon can change the stoma size using the
access port to add or subtract saline inside the
inner Gastric Banding balloon. This adjustment process
helps drive the rate of weight loss: If the band
is too loose and weight loss inadequate, adding
more saline can reduce the size of the stoma to
restrict further the amount of food that can
move through it. If the band is too tight, the
surgeon will remove some saline to loosen the
band and reduce the amount of restriction.

Weight Loss
Results
The Gastric Banding helps patients
achieve sustained weight loss by limiting the
amount of food they can eat, reducing their
appetites and slowing digestion. The Gastric
Banding by itself will not solve
morbid obesity, nor will it ensure patients
reach their goal weight—or even that they lose
weight at all!
The amount of
weight each patient loses depends on the
effectiveness of the Gastric Banding and on the
patient’s commitment to a new lifestyle that
includes different eating habits. Some people
lose more than others, and though you may never
each your ideal weight, chances are good that
patients will lose a significant amount of
weight, increasing their health and self-esteem.
Removing the Gastric Banding
If there is a problem with the Gastric Banding - if the
patient can't lose enough weight or can't adjust
to the new eating habits - the surgeon may
suggest removal of the Lap-Band, a simple,
noninvasive procedure.
Generally after
removal of the Gastric Banding, the patient’s stomach
will be restored to its original form, and the
digestive tract should function normally. Please
keep in mind that when the band is removed, the
patient’s weight will likely increase.
Who Benefits from Adjustable Gastric
Banding
Gastric Banding, Lap-Band or Swedish Band is not
for everyone. It may be
indicated in patients who meet specific criteria
and who do not want, or are not candidates
for Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery at
this time. Our surgeons can help you decide
if your problem is suitable for Gastric
Banding or other procedure.
