A tropical kingdom near the equator in South
East Asia, beautiful Thailand is a land of paradoxes and
contradictions.
Bangkok is a modern capital city with
skyscrapers, side by side with gilt temples and
upscale shopping malls, comparable to the finest
in Paris or New York.

From spectacular beaches to jungles, mountains
to rice fields and temples to nightlife,
Thailand has something for everyone.
The Kingdom
has a population of over 62 million in an area
of 517,000 sq.km. which is slightly smaller than
the state of Texas. Approximately 95 % of Thais
are Buddhists. |
Known as "The Land of Smiles",
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy. His
Majesty, King Bumiphol (Rama IX), is the
longest reigning monarch in the world.
He is
loved and revered - and with good reason:
Seldom leaving Thailand, His Majesty has
devoted his life to improving the life of his
people, especially those in greatest need -
the "upcountry" rural poor.
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is by far the
largest city in the kingdom with its population
of probably more than 10 million - although
nobody knows the number for sure. |

Famous for their gracious hospitality, the
smiling Thais make Bangkok the friendliest - and
perhaps the safest - big city in the world. With
its clean, fast, air-conditioned "sky
train", cheap, plentiful taxis and cars for
hire, Bangkok is easy to explore. A good start
to getting around would be to purchase one of
the many available maps of Bangkok and just go,
or to hire a guide if you prefer. |
